Thank you for your interest in Sumach Press. As a small independent Canadian feminist press, we publish 9 or 10 titles a year. It's a good idea to check out our books by browsing our website or at your local library or bookseller before you decide Sumach Press is the best place to submit your work.

Fiction

Those interested in submitting adult fiction can either send an outline together with sample chapters, or a complete manuscript.

If you are writing for young adults, you can send a story proposal or a complete manuscript. Please keep in mind that as a feminist press we are looking for non-sexist, non-racist stories which relate to young people's lives today.

Non-fiction

If you are submitting non-fiction, you can send a proposal, sample chapters or full manuscripts.

Please note the following:

All submissions must include a self-addressed envelope, stamped with sufficient postage to return your sample chapters or manuscript. We only return materials with self-addressed stamped envelopes. For submissions outside Canada, use International postal coupons — U.S. writers please note this includes you. U.S. stamps for return postage do not work.

Please allow a period of 3-4 months for us to consider your submission.

Notify us if you are sending your manuscript to several publishers.

We are not currently soliciting poetry or drama.

We do not accept manuscripts by e-mail or fax.

We do not respond more quickly to e-mail queries or faxes. If you are making an initial query, we strongly suggest you approach us by mail with a SASE.

Please do not phone a month after you submit a query. We are assessing many manuscripts and it may take us several months to get to yours.
